The Role

 

Has a clear focus on increasingly “capability” in order to help drive the business to the “next level”. It encompasses both the engineering of the product and how it is manufactured as well as other areas of engineering such as how the business processes and produces products, provides supporting information and the justifications covering product information.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Working closely with the Product Director, add to overall senior capacity of existing product and engineering management, processing and development
  • Take the lead in simplifying systems, enhancing processes and manufacturing guidelines in order to enhance a smooth transition of products from development into the production environment
  • Manage technical office staff/ processes; as the “go to person”, provide direction, advice and support
  • Key role in “Hands on” support and development of the product ranges including further developing controls and processes and then delegating/overseeing controls around this.
  • Break down any barriers, listen, understand, implement and work with others to put in place effective product management systems
  • Provide experience, input and advice on engineering solutions & production methods
  • Oversee the production of simple, easy to follow processes & documentation for product manufacturing and engineering that improve effectiveness and are compliant with technical / quality standards
  • Manage Product Engineering, operations & staff
  • Take ownership of new and outstanding design, development product support projects across the life cycle; provide expertise and support to operational areas
  • Manage Product support information
  • Manage, oversee and contribute to major sales order project work & internal engineering projects

 

 

Person Specification:

 

Essential Skills & Background

 

  • Steel fabrication and welding
  • Engineering/Product management
  • Management of projects in a structured way with experience in the development of suitable processes to support this
  • Management of Engineering and Technical staff
  • Mechanical/structural engineering (HNC/HND/ or degree qualified)
  • Senior role within a product manufacturing organisation – small/medium batch light and medium steel fabrication
  • Technical/Drawing Office experience including understanding of productionisation
  • Implementation and working in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 / ISO 9001:2015
  • Familiar with welding standards such as BS EN 287-1:2011, BS EN ISO 9606-1:2013 and BS EN 1011-1:2009
  • Familiar with the use of engineering software for verification of structures 
  • Achievements in improving capacity and the elimination of inefficient processes
  • Ability to understand manufacturing processes, deadlines, methods and techniques within a highly responsive SME business

 

Desirable Skills & Background

 

  • A ‘structural’ engineering product background
  • Conversant with technical standards covering structural design such as BS EN 1993-1-1:2005, BS EN 1991-1-4:2005 and BS EN 40-3-1:2013
  • Familiar with implementation of CE marking for steel fabrication and welding

  • Personal initiative, attention to detail and the ability to drive change / deliver value.

  • Good organisational skills with the ability to project manage effectively
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
  • Ability to interpret technical product information and convey this to the team so that all members fully understand what is required from them
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and a common-sense approach to problem solving
