Product engineering manager - niche electronic instruments

An exciting opportunity for an established Engineering Manager or an ambitious Senior Project Engineer, Project Manager, Senior Product Design / Development / Applications or Principal Engineer who can demonstrate the attributes required to “step up” to join this entrepreneurial high-tech electronics company, who specialise in developing and delivering high quality niche instrumentation for a demanding international customer base.

As the departmental manager for the engineering team, you will take personal and “hands on” responsibility for new product design/development & product support in a competitive business environment. This will require a focus on structured project management that delivers product designs, in a timely manner and with an emphasis on faster and more efficient development cycle times, built in reliability and consideration for manufacturing processes in order to meet the needs of customers.


The Role


  • Motivate and inspire the team to deliver targets and create a proactive environment of improvement
  • Create and maintain commercially viable engineering solutions (software & hardware) for customer driven projects
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of the product range, the relative applications and use that knowledge to design and develop products for the future that meet business goals
  • Ensure product design is suitable for efficient manufacturing and service of all products; implement robust practices that enhance quality and reliability
  • Develop plans and manage resources efficiently to deliver customer specific projects, field investigations and development programmes that include formal approval testing
  • Manage product technical literature and design change requests; ensure all product software and releases to customers are fully tested and compliant to specification
  • Create and maintain software, hardware control and verification methodology in support of all products
  • Oversee design criticality for robustness and compliance in regulated environments, including temperature extremes, vibration, electromagnetic compatibility and humidity
  • Manage the design and development cycle including review of critical parameters and formal stage gate release
  • Integration of software into electronic products and development/life cycle testing
  • Manage all open-ended customer design projects, provide technical comments for tenders and quotations
  • Disseminate technical information and ensure coherent communication with cross functional teams
  • Ensure version control is used for all software projects
  • Implement best practice configuration change document control procedures for ECR systems etc
  • Ensure robustness of all relevant company software coding, design rules and QA guidelines
  • Manage capital expenditure justification and delivery to budget within defined commercially acceptable time scales
  • Provide a strong focus on cost control, value engineering and programme adherence
  • Work closely with the Technical Director for approvals and evidential criteria
  • Champion initiatives that will reduce the costs of next generation products, enhance quality & improve reliability
  • Oversee full product support requirements, improve change control and obsolescence


The Candidate


  • Degree in Software/Computer/Electronics or equivalent
  • An understanding of software development is important, and this should ideally have been gained with a multi-disciplined business environment that encompasses mechatronics, software or chemistry
  • Sector relevancies might include spells within medical devices, automotive, electronics, telecoms, measurement equipment, instrumentation or controls
  • Experience of working with CE product marking and within regulated markets would be advantageous
  • Fully conversant with all stages of a high technology product lifecycle
  • Experience of improving product development cycle times by simplifying systems, eliminating inefficient processes and by developing clear guidance for the transition of products from development into production
  • Micro Controller experience and in particular expertise around the design and application of ARM processors
  • Working knowledge of analogue/digital electronics including serial communication interfaces / DC power supplies
  • An understanding of the fundamentals of PCB’s
  • Working knowledge of applications using C, C++, Visual C++, Assembly, SQL, HTML/XML, Visual Basic 6, Java, Delphi and VHDL software
  • Experience in testing, debug, maintenance, integration, assembly, validations, component & equipment issues
  • An understanding of the latest software and wireless technology for GSM & Bluetooth development
  • Obsolescence management experience
  • Exposure to root cause analysis for investigations, also product and system level to support extended product life
  • Commercially astute, with evidence of leadership, coaching & team development skills
  • A methodical problem solver who is able to critically analyse information & issues
  • A strong leader and decision maker with excellent communication, presentation and project management skills
  • Have an enthusiasm for emerging technologies and an awareness of competitor related development activities
  • Able to demonstrate technical credibility with customers and be willing to travel overseas when required
